Letter from Coach Charles 3-10-14

Dear Parents, Welcome to another AAU / YBOA season! For the parents that have been with us a while they pretty much know the drills but for those who don’t or have forgotten , I will put our parent letters out to update you on what is going on, what to expect, where we are going. If you have any question contact me or one of our coaches. Another good reference  are the other parents that have been in our organization for a while.

Organization of Teams & Game Schedules

This week we will post training teams  (at the gym) and their practice days and times. This is now your day and time to train. GAME TEAMS WILL BE POSTED THURSDAY. Occasionally we will combine different teams to combine and play in tourney games, which will usually require some of our best players on one team. This will be the exception not the rule. We will notify you when we  put together tourney teams. If your child  can’t  make a game I need to know by text asap. We will be adding and moving players for the first week or two, do not be  alarmed.  Each team will be colored coded and this will be how you find your team for game  time and locations.

Staying Up To Date

Check our website or make sure to have us friended on facebook for all our updates and changes for games, training, gym concerns. This as well as emails are how we communicate. If you are not getting emails place your email on the box at the gym and we will put you on our list. Each team will have a team parent but this person is not to be over burdened with calls, this person will help with communication from me to you guys. They will help with info. for games and late notice changes.

The "Big Speech"

Here is The Big Speech to make sure we are all on the same PAGE: I will speak freely and mean no harm to anyone but need make sure no one is under a different understanding. We are teaching local players basketball with the intention of making them the best they can be in Basketball and people skills. We have been doing this for 10 yrs or so and know what we are up against and how to develop your child into players. It is not a 2-3 month process it is much longer than that. We use AAU and YBOA and their teams to make our players better. We have been very successful in doing this. Our goal is to make sure your child has a successful and or rewarding REC., JR High, and or High School career. We  must make your child better than your neighbor to achieve that. We know what is needed and what coaches are looking for. No coach ever asked how many games did your child win 3 or 4 yrs ago. They care about the present state of your child abilities. Improving those abilities  is what we do and have been doing. We want to win but making your child better individually is our intention. What we will focus on to improve your child:
  •   Ball Skills- Dribbling, Catching, Passing, etc
  •   Defense- Man to Man Techniques
  •   Fast Breaking, Press Breaking, etc
All of the above and more will be taught in a variety of different  formats. We will train your child’s brain and feet. From that they will become better players. Do not worry that your child is not be trained  the same as someone else, players are different and need different things. There are no politics involved here, everyone is treated equally. As we play our games, the early games may be ugly as players learn the system and get use to playing with each other. It gets better as we progress and the players understand they are accountable  for their play and advancement. Now for the tough stuff, you live on the Northshore. We will play kids from New Orleans to Baton Rouge and everywhere else. You live in Volleyball, Soccer,  Baseball,  Tennis, Golf, etc . area. Your child is most likely not going to be as tough, driven, forced etc., as some of the teams we play. Their priorities are different than ours here. We do not recruit or have crazy people in our group. We DEVELOP players. In DEVELOPING players there are many things we must cover. We have our players play all positions for the most part, we don’t pigeon hold anyone in a position. You never know who is going to grow and who will stop. Our development plan is to teach: LEADERSHIP, ACCOUNTABILITY, RESPONSIBILITY, SELF CONFIDENCE, HUMILITY, SPORTSMANSHIP, BE A BETTER TEAMMATE, CHARACTER, COMPETITIVENESS AND BASKETBALL. Doing this will take winning, losing, working hard, having fun, being tough and focused AND NOT SHUTTING DOWN IN TOUGH TIMES. As much about life as anything else.

3rd - 7th Grade Players

For the 3-7 grader parents- the games will be more about the best athletes. Who is the fastest usually wins. Pressing and breaking and shooting layups is majority of game. You will also see kids who are definitely not age appropriate , that is just how other teams play. As long as we don’t get hurt it is good for your child to play bigger older kids. In the proper prospective it  gives confidence.

Older Players

For 8 grade up parents, these are the years to see what your child knows,  ability to properly apply learning and ability to compete. WE WILL START TO FOCUS PLAYERS INTO 1-3 POSITIONS. This is what High School coaches are looking to do.

To the Parents

FOR ALL PARENTS: WE ARE DIFFERENT BECAUSE WE USE THE GAMES TO CHALLENGE OUR PLAYERS TO EXPLORE WHAT THEY CAN AND CAN’T DO AND REALIZE WHERE THEY NEED TO GET TO. WE ARE NOT LOOKING AT TROPHIES OR TITLES. WE DEVELOP/BUILD. OUR PLAYERS FOR THE MOST PART DON’T TRAIN TOGETHER. SATURDAY GAMES IS THE ONLY  TIME THEY PLAY TOGETHER. WE DON’T WANT THEM TO BE COMFORTABLE, WE WANT THEM THINKING AND REACTING AND LEADING. TOUGH THING TO DO, YOU HAVE TO HAVE THICK SKIN. I CAN SHOW YOU KIDS WITH TONS OF TROPHIES AND TITLES WHO CAN’T PLAY. IN JUNE  YOU WILL BE AMAZED. HAPPENS  EVERY YEAR. AS COACHES WE LOOK AT THE GAMES DIFFERENT THAN THE PARENTS, WE LOOK TO SEE IF OUR PLAYERS ARE USING THE SKILLS, FUNDAMENTALS, TECHNIQUE WE ARE TEACHING. WE WANT THEM TO USE THEM EVEN IF THEY CAN’T OR HAVE A HARD TIME. THIS BREAKS BARRIERS AND REENSURES THE PLAYER THAN THEY CAN ACHIEVE.
